Brand Origin

Baka is a slow-designed, contemporary, sustainable, ethically-handcrafted jewelry brand by Rhizome—India's first multidisciplinary sustainability design studio. Looking at ecological, cultural, social, and economic aspects of sustainability, the brand believes that sustainability can be mainstreamed into fashion through good design, and that is exactly what they intend to deliver to you. The brand wants to shake the giant machine which controls the fashion world. They do love the idea of trends and do give a nod to fast fashion, but they do it when they think it is appropriate—not because they believe that they have to. They take as long as it needs to develop something— and design for customization.

Production Details

Their pieces are handcrafted by traditional and contemporary craftspeople as they try and keep skills alive by using traditional methods in contemporary ways to keep tradition dynamic. Being a learning studio, if a non-traditional would-be crafts-person wants to learn handcrafting, they teach them in an apprentice-mode and aim to provide livelihoods. They therefore don't use machines as far as possible unless it is to aid the human hand. They are not Luddites, but love the handmade and are more into Arts and Crafts. The pieces are made from clean elements such as up-cycled, repurposed, recyclable and renewable materials. Ethically-sourcing these materials ensures that the money paid out goes to sending kids to school, and allows women to go to the doctors — and it does not line the purses of already-wealthy conglomerates.
