Cherophobia

A modern day psychological tale of the fear of happiness

Okay, so my brother usually calls me up and says “Anusha, I am happier than usual lately and my life is on track, I think something very bad is on its way now” . Well, what is this?

Cherophobia is a psychological condition characterized by an irrational fear or aversion to experiencing happiness or enjoying good things. The term is derived from the Greek word "Chero," which means "to rejoice" or "be happy," and "phobia," which means fear.

Individuals with Cherophobia may have difficulty embracing positive emotions. They often fear that if they experience happiness, something negative will follow, or they may feel unworthy of happiness altogether.

You know that feeling when something seems too good to be true - when it looks like a lot has happened in your favour recently, so it's suspicious?

Some people can't get over this feeling, and their good fortune takes a sinister turn in their mind.

SOLUTION

Overcoming cherophobia is a gradual process, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. The right approach will depend on the individual's specific situation, severity of symptoms, and personal preferences. It's important to consult with a mental health professional to determine the most appropriate treatment plan.

Ultimately, tackling cherophobia is changing the way you think. If you think you may have it, it's likely a defence mechanism that you've put up, that was built because of a past conflict or trauma.

It will take time to work through your problems, but with treatment, you may be able to get past it, enjoy happiness, and start living in the moment.

AFTER ALL, SOMETIMES ITS ALL IN OUR HEAD, RIGHT?
